The Application and Selection Process

We are looking for candidates with a passion for their subject who are able to demonstrate a positive outlook, a resilient nature and a dedication to improving the learning outcomes of the children that they teach.

Applications through the Department for Education's website are screened prior to inviting you to interview. We will look for applicants that fulfill the entry requirements and are able to demonstrate a keen desire and passion for teaching, and specifically, their chosen subject.

Generally interviews take place at the school where you would be based for your main placement. This allows you to meet the Head of your Department and/or your mentor and makes the selection process a two-way decision; can we make you into an outstanding teacher and can you see yourself training within that department? Currently interviews are also being carried out via Google Hangout online when necessary.

The interview process has three stages:
  • An activity with a group of children (or delivered as though children are present)
  • A written task to test your spelling and grammar
  • A formal interview with a panel comprising the SCITT Director/Deputy Director and a subject specialist from school

During the activity with children we will be looking for your capacity to relate to children and how well you are able to communicate your subject knowledge to them. We are looking for candidates with the potential to become great teachers, full of enthusiasm and a desire to stimulate and engage pupils.

The written task will test your ability to spot grammatical and spelling errors and then provide us with an indication of your knowledge of English Language. No matter which subject you want to train to teach you will need to promote high standards of  literacy, articulacy and the correct use of standard English with all pupils.

During the interview, the panel will question you to ascertain your suitability to work with children, your subject knowledge, resilience, desire and determination to become a teacher.

When a decision has been made you will be notified via the government website.
If you do not immediately fulfil all the entry requirements for the course then a conditional offer may be made. For example, if you have not yet completed your degree. You may accept the conditional offer and once we have seen evidence that the conditions have been met then your offer would become an unconditional one.

Our commitment to safer recruitment ensures that all safeguarding checks are undertaken: references, Enhanced DBS check , prohibited teachers list check, childcare disqualification check, health questionnaire and capacity to teach check  and checks from abroad where relevant.

What happens next?

Shortly before the start of your course you will be asked to complete an enhanced DBS check. This will require you to bring certain original documents to the SCITT office in order for us the photocopy them and verify your identity. The cost of this is approximately £45.00. Once the DBS check is complete you may apply to subscribe for the Portability Update Service. For a small annual fee your DBS check moves with you meaning you would not have to complete another DBS check when you are employed in a school after you receive QTS at the end of your course.

DBS PORTABILITY
When you start your course you will be asked to read and sign a Code of Conduct and a Contract agreeing to adhere to the rules, policies and expectations of the SCITT and partner schools. You will also be issued with a Course Handbook and be given access and full training on how to use the SCITT Portal where you and your mentor will record evidence of your progress.
